What are the common causes and solutions for hot patch inductors?

The problem of chip inductors becoming hot during use is indeed a problem that has been mentioned more frequently. In fact, the chip inductors do not generate much heat in normal use. If you encounter such an obvious temperature rise or hotness, there are mainly the following common situations:

(1) It may be caused by the relatively thin coil wire diameter of the chip inductor. If the wire diameter is too thin, the resistance of the chip inductor will increase. In this way, when the effective value of the current is constant, the chip inductor is easier to heat;

(2) It may also be caused by heat generation due to the saturation of the chip inductance, but the heat generation in this case is a normal situation, and there is no need to worry too much;


(3) It may be hot due to the large oscillating voltage at both ends of the circuit of the chip inductor.


If the chip inductor becomes hot during use, it can be analyzed and checked from the above three aspects. To solve the problem of heat generation of chip inductors, you can also try the following methods:


(1) Design and install a cooling fan to drive heat. This is currently a more common method. For example, the fan can be seen on the main box of our computer to dissipate heat;


(2) Apply heat-dissipating paint to the chip inductors to cool down. For example, applying silicone grease to the CPU of our computer to cool down is the same.


(3) In addition to the above two methods, it is also possible to use thermal impedance electronic components with high thermal conductivity. For example, when selecting a chip inductor, select the corresponding electronic component through the thermal impedance value of the chip inductor coil.
