Barron has the following three basic functions:
1. switching current or voltage from unbalanced to balanced
2. common-mode current suppression through certain structures
3. Impedance conversion through certain structures (impedance ratio not equal to 1:1)
balun is divided into many types, some of which are used for impedance conversion, and some for connecting transmission lines with different impedances. impedance conversion balun enables impedance matching, dc isolation, and matching the balance port with the single-ended port. The common mode choke is also a balun in a sense because it eliminates common mode signals. balun is used for push-pull amplifiers, broadband antennas, balance mixers, balance doublers and modulators, phase shifters, and any circuit design that requires equal transmission amplitude and phase difference of 180 degrees on two lines.
the most common use of balun is to connect unbalanced signals to balanced transmission lines for long distance transmission. differential signaling using balanced transmission lines is less affected by noise and crosstalk than single-ended signaling using coaxial cables, can use lower voltage and is more cost-effective. Thus, Barron can be used as an interface between local video, audio and digital signals and long-distance transmission lines.
