What is the function of common mode noise and common mode inductance

Common mode noise, also known as asymmetrical noise or line to ground noise, exists at the input of electrical equipment using AC power supply (transmission line and neutral line), and the phase of both to ground remains in phase.

The current of common mode noise flows in the same direction on both transmission lines and returns through the ground wire.

Common mode noise can be suppressed by placing an inductance in series with each transmission line in the EMI filter, and connecting the two transmission lines to the ground with a Y capacitor.

Common mode inductors, also known as common mode chokes, are often used to filter common mode EMI signals in switching power supplies of computers. In the board design, the common mode inductor also plays the role of EMI filter, which is used to suppress the electromagnetic wave generated by high-speed signal line radiated outward.
