Common mode inductors, also called common mode chokes, are often used to filter the common mode electromagnetic interference signals in the switching power supply of the computer. In the design of the board, the common mode inductor also has function of EMI filtering, which is used to suppress electromagnetic radiation emitted from high speed signal lines.

Work Principle 

Why can the common mode inductor be able to prevent EMI? To make this clear, we need to start with the analysis of the structure of the common mode inductor.

The filter circuits of common mode inductors, La and Lb are common mode inductors. The two coils are around the same core, and the number and phase are the same (around the reverse). In this way, when the normal current in the circuit flows through the common mode inductor, the current will cancel each other in the same phase inductance coil, and the normal signal current is mainly affected by the coil resistance (and a small amount of damping due to leakage). When there is a common mode electric current, there is a common mode electric current.

Current flowing in the coil, due to the common mode current in the coil, it will produce the same magnetic field to increase the inductance of the coil. The coil impedance is high and have strong damping effect. Due to the attenuation of common mode current , finally it achieves the purpose of filtering.

In fact, one end of the filter circuit is connected to the interference source and the other end is jammed. La and C1, Lb and C2 constitute two groups of low-pass filters, which can make the common mode EMI signal on the line be controlled at a very low level. The circuit can not only suppress the incoming of the external EMI signal, but also attenuate the EMI signal produced by the circuit itself, and can effectively reduce the EMI interference intensity.
